Ilaaka.com - A community Site is now on Drupal 5.12

Ilaaka was one of the first Migration projects that Openkick undertook. Although with some help from Gloscon, it successfully carried out the migration of Ilaaka from Drupal 4.7 to Drupal 5.12. We all know how what archaic systems can do and we found it out the hard way when we saw how existing modules were customized in order to reflect the desired functionality.

Program Highlights of Drupal Camp

Drupal camp India is a well diversified camp where there are three major tracks. This is a great platform for developers, students and marketing personals and this are exactly the same tracks in which drupal camp India is designed. This three tracks will be focusing to achieve the goal of spreading the drupal word, may it be attracting young generation towards drupal and as a whole the open source movement or sharing knowledge, networking and finally enhancing the drupal community and making its foundation more stronger. Also a major focus will be to explore the opportunities for drupal, creating market awareness about it and developing new tools that would be more beneficial to the market and as a whole increase the market base.

Students Track:

Here the sessions will focus primarily on giving an overview about Drupal and other open source software and technologies. Also the attention would be towards the benefits of drupal and how it actually scores above other similar technologies and platforms. A sneak peak into a bright future which drupal beholds for them. There will be a couple of motivation sessions too which would really helpful to them.

Developers Track:

Here we will be having sessions which would ideally have presentations from drupal based developers that enriches the knowledge about drupal and provide new solutions. There will be potent discussions about the projects the companies have done with drupal, their experience and discussions about the bugs that are faced and finding of real time solutions to them.

Marketing Track:

Sessions in this track would be focused in exploring the various ways in which drupal would be useful to the business organizations and plethora of distinctive capabilities that drupal has. The sessions would include facts and figures of how really the business community benefited by associating with drupal. Demonstrations will be made on how drupal could help augmenting the business in a better and efficient way. Different new fields where drupal could make a mark.

Job Fair:

Additionally the Drupal Camp will host a job fair that is surely going to provide a very useful interface between the students and the companies; this will serve a good cause for companies to find a suitable candidate for the job and vice versa for the students. Along with it the Drupal Code Sprint that would be a stage where the professionals would work towards fruitful changes and improvements so as to make drupal a more efficient tool.

The most important aim of any camp or conference is to really meet with like minded people, share ideas, discuss business and learn about the business opportunities and this camp would surely live up to this expectations and much more.

Why you should attend Drupal Camp India in August 2008 ?

If you are a Drupal Development shop or an end client using Drupal CMS or an interactive agency looking to move some of the new and existing clients to Drupal, you should seriously consider attending Drupal Camp India.

Outside of United States, India has the largest Drupal Community and this community is growing every day. Drupal is a fantastic platform which any Web start-up can use to build their product. Today the world is going through many economic challenges i.e. stock market crash, rising inflation, rising crude prices, labour costs to name a few. Developing a Web property in Drupal Content Management Framework does require certain degree of expertise otherwise your project can see lot of delays. Well, when you have a large team, costs can go out of control. Outsourcing if managed well can help you with some of these issues.

India has well established IT processes and has a young talent pool that can be tapped by many organizations. One solution maybe to take on Project Management and Interactive Design piece within your organization internally and then outsource the site building part offshore. This is very well established model in Drupal Community and many companies are doing it. There are many reasons for this.

1. Leading Drupal shops have got brilliant Drupal developers. They have always led the innovation track which has made Drupal - the most respected open source CMS. They have built many high traffic showcase sites. As they continue to innovate and take on large enterprise clients, they also have a challenge to continue the support of the finished products. In one scenario, they hand over the site maintenance to the end client. If the client has ongoing development needs - needing lot of tweaking, customizations and ongoing support, it becomes a challenge to manage this relationship. Such shops can reach out Indian developers and development houses and build strong relationship with them to provide ongoing maintenance to such clients.

2. Many clients cannot afford to hire full time development resources at North American rates to support the site. India based development houses do provide good options for ongoing support. One option, they may consider is a long term relationship under Business Incubation model. This way, they are in more control of the resources and can direct them with minimal vendor intervention.

3. Many Drupal sites are still running on 4.x versions and have not got resources to upgrade the site to latest versions. With Drupal 6 release, most new development is happening on Drupal 6 and some clients may want to use some of the new modules but they have a challenge to upgrade their site which is generally a very labour intensive task and also need someone to have solid Drupal expertise. Indian based companies can pull in required resources to help in migration work.

4. Large enterprises and start-ups with unique ideas have needs that are complex and in many cases they find that Drupal Code base (Core and contributed) not have modules that meet their needs. Some of this require lot more research and customization of Drupal. This is more risk. Such tasks of Proof of Concept can be moved over to Offshore Company.

Besides these are many other advantages of forming partnership with Indian enterprises. Drupal Camp India aims to bring together a large pool of Drupal and Open Source talent together in this event. This camp will not only spread Drupal Knowledge in India and thereby increase its penetration in Indian markets but for those International companies who tap on Indian talent early on - will be able to scale their business faster than their competition.

Duplicate content is harmful.

You have a very good site. And you have good keyword combination and getting good traffic from your keywords though if you use the same content for more than one page than it is very harmful for your site, Duplicate contains occurs many problems. It's something you want to avoid as much as possible. In this, people have reported their pages disappearing completely from the search results because of duplicate content. Drupal is a very friendly with SEO. It contains Modules and Files are available for such a problem.
Example
robots .txt File-
In this if we have two pages with the same content than by this file we can say search engine to ignore that page. For that we have to just write
Disallow: /node/
after this any content that's only accessible from a /node/ URL will no longer get indexed by search engines.

Drupal Template

Drupal is as flexible in terms of template development as you can get it. Almost anything is possible if you know what you are doing.

You might need toa spend some time learning all the ins and outs of Drupal template development, like what can be done via theme functions and template.php, how you can create content-type specific page and node templates and so on. But this comes with its flexibility; other CMS are either less flexible (Joomla) or are similar complex or even more complex (Typo3).

Getting Started with Drupal

The Drupal content management system maintains its content in a database. Within the database, the content is stored as nodes and other high-level objects, such as users and comments. There are a variety of different, predefined node types including stories, blogs, and polls.

Drupal constructs pages that contain one or more pieces of information in the form of nodes, blocks, and other items. Each page is typically organized around a center column of content with left and right side-bars, and a header and footer. With the exception of the center column of content, the other areas are optional.

The center column is used to display the main site content; the optional areas are for additional content. Drupal uses blocks to fill the optional areas with small pieces of information. The optional areas typically hold navigation links (for example, most popular nodes) and other abbreviated content. Just like any content, blocks can be made dependent on the user's role, providing a customized view of the information.

One of the most important features of Drupal is the ability to extend the types of nodes available, such as your application-specific content, by writing custom node modules. Modules are extensions to Drupal that implement one or more from a predefined interface. Hooks define user permissions, interact with the database, and provide an interface to edit the content.

The menu system controls the navigation of the Web site and is fully customizable through the user interface. By contrast, the menu hook function controls how URLs are formed, how URLs are translated, and what function a specific URL will call. Newcomers to Drupal are frequently misled by the name of this hook function because it is not really about menus. So be aware that this is a possible point of confusion when dealing with "menus" in Drupal.

The separation of content from presentation is enabled by a system that themes the pages based on templates. Most content can easily be structured and styled by defining a set of template, or tpl, files and theme functions.

Nodes can be organized into categories or txonomies. Forums are an example of hierarchical content within a taxonomy.

All the content is accessed through a permissions system to control the access and editing of content on the Web site.
